Get involved in contesting, the best school of top notch operating. The recipe
is: work them fast, or faster than they are coming on. Split frequency 3 to 5
kHz up or down. Decent operator can work them at about 8 stations a minute on
SSB or CW, if gets cooperation. Stations should give a full call, not this
"last two letters" nonsense, which requires repeats. Not giving call is stupid
and creates only dupes. It takes as much time to say "Tee Thirty Alpha" as
"Quuue AAAr Zeeed". If pileup gets too deep, go by districts, or jump to new
frequency/band and leave packetniks screaming their heads off on the old one.
Back in old days with no packet, stations would be coming on frequency almost
one by one as they discovered the station = smooth operation. Now you have
announcements on packet and - Bingo - instant deep pileup. Just like in
anything else - you got good operators and not so got. With not so good you
just have to scream a little longer. Enjoy it while they are there!
Wanna see demonstration? Please work me in WPX contest on 160m. Let's see if
can work more than 8 a minute. This year domestic QSOs count for 1 point, no
more zero point nonsense!
