No, you don't. At least not for cut numbers. The main problem, as I see
it, is that one expect NUMBERS after 5nn. Receiving a letter instead
forces him/her to translate it into a number and then re-entering the
main sequence (hand to keyboard to decode the following character). The
brain's speed limitation is aggravated by the fact that letters are
shorter. This is happening to me, anyway. I fully agree that cut numbers
are more a hindrance than a help.
