I've got experience running SO2R horizontally, but not vertically. In
the 70's I learned to run two transceivers at W6HX. I wasn't the
first
to operate this way, but I was one of the early ones. I narrowly
defeated W9IOP the very last time he put on a competitive effort in
the CW SS using a Drake TR3 transceiver and a pair of 813's for
one station (15/40) and a Drake R4A/T4X with a single 3-1000Z
for the other station. I was able to make quick band changes,
although I hadn't learned to do real SO2R at that point in time.
The difference between then and now is the keyboard. The
computer keyboard sits in the way on the desk between you and
the rig, no matter how you stack it. If you want to be able to
reach the left hand tuning know with your left hand, the right hand
tuning knob has to be behind the keyboard. Inconvenient.
Oh, you can recess the keyboard in the desk to help you reach
over it, but that means that your elbow might not have a place to
rest while you tune the right hand rig. You might hang the
keyboard under the desk. This means that the rigs have to come
forward on the desk by the distance that you are offset
backwards away from the desk. It also means that your elbow
can't rest on the table when using either rig.
So in a world where a keyboard belongs at the operating
position, vertical stacking makes a lot of sense. The keyboard
can go on the table, and both rigs can go to the left.
