I was first licensed in 1968, did SWL'ing prior
to that. Heard a VERY STRONG W2OY who would call
'CQ NO KIDS, NO LIDS, NO SPACE CADETS, CLASS A
OPERATORS ONLY!' and then sign. He had a small
couterie of folks he'd talk with/to/at but he
garnered his share of QRM.
I asked my Elmer about it and he laughingly
explained that OY was a known character. He
called him 'colorful and eccentric'. All others
predictably ignored him and just chuckled at his
antics.
I never worked him (as a WN/WA I'd never have
made the cut! HI) but used to hear him every so
often. In fact I pointed him out to my
contemporaries and told them 'if you EVER hear me
get that way - SHOOT ME!' and we'd laugh.
We all knew it was silly and we ignored it -save
for comical relief. We knew he was harmless.
There were others too (certain 2-land stations
who mail out pre-completed OO notices :-), but
W2OY is the one that seemed to be the most widely
known for his 'antics'. He was the USA's 'nutty
member of the family you keep in the back room
and never let out in good company'
