The comment about the YM embracing technology and
the OM wanting to hold onto the old ways made me
think of this.
A YM with packet will NEVER beat at OM with
packet.
The OM (with experience) will already know about
band conditions, propagation, and the operation of
his station. Plus he knows to LISTEN FIRST to
verify packet spots rather than 'see, point,
click, CALL'. He'll quickly avoid the clutter and
distraction of the massive pileups.
Odds are, a YM (new op) with packet will have a
tough time beating a OM WITHOUT packet.
Why? becuase his experience in band conditions,
propagation, and past knowledge of contest ops
will allow him to quickly scan the band, pick up
those stations/mults and move ahead to anotehr
frequency or band of interest. Plus his ability
to handle pileups will allow him to slice and
dice things to get through them more quickly.
A YM WITH technology can only hope ot level the
playing field against an OM with EXPERIENCE. puta
n OM with experience in there and the YM has (at
best) a chance to come in a distant 2nd or 3rd)
