I guess then that you'd just have to scratch the QSO if the other person
doesn't know his grid square.

Is it permissible during the contest to ask him what city he's in
(hopefully he's in a city) and then tell him what grid square he is in?
Hopefully he's in a place where it can be quickly determined.
