I have just the opposite opinion. I've owned both the TS-850S/AT and the
IC-746PRO and would take the ICOM any day. The '850 has serious leakage
around the filters while the '746PRO has none at all. If you wanted to
stay with Kenwood, the TS-870S is a much better radio than the '850
where filters are concerned.
I will say the '746 has had some quality problems - mine went back to
the factory twice in the first couple of months, but it's been a year or
so since then and it's been perfect since.
