One of our TCGers was similarly "dinged". (me? Nope, I stealthily
arranged to be out of town during CW SS.....)
It looks like in the extreme case, an operator could possibly be
credited with as much as two minutes of operating time he didn't
actually use for each operating period. (in Dave's case, with three
operating periods, six minutes of time during the contest) It looks as
if the robot believes that if you operated for any portion of a minute,
you operated for the entire minute.
On the other hand...
the robot doesn't believe an operating period has begun until you
complete your first QSO in that period. If you:
- Tune around filling the bandmap and checking conditions before you
call anyone...
- Call CQ for a minute or two before anyone answers...
- Run QRP and get "beat out" for four or five QSOs before someone comes
back to you...
then the time spent doing that isn't counted as operating time by the
robot. But the rules of most contests say it should be.
