Craig,
IRLP may be ONLY a linking protocol, but I guarantee you I could buy
an IRLP "kit" and interface it to a headset and keypad very easily.
I would then have a "baseband node" that would permit me to access
any IRLP node without the involvement of any radio.
Similarly, since IRLP uses open source protocols on LINUX, I have no
doubt that a competent programmer could create a compatible application
for Windows or LINUX in less time than N1MM et al, W5XD, or any of the
other Windows contest software developers have invested in their
programs.
I repeat, support by the ARRL for IRLP, Echolink, or any other
communications system that uses non-amateur frequencies is a
dangerous betrayal of Amateur Radio and I urge the Board to take
a public stand against all forms of non-amateur "linking."
