In a nutshell: I think "tough cookies". K1ZM saw an advantage,
exploited it, and has apparently won both modes of ARRL DX. Good for
him. I'd do the same thing if I could work it out. There have been
plenty of ARRL DX SSB single op wins from the United States.
My view: the problem is not one of below/above 14150. The problem is
that DX contesting essentially is a non-competitive exercise for the
vast majority of the United States and Canada. Until the scoring for
DX contests is based on the distance of the contact rather than just
the sheer number of contacts and countries contacted, there is little
sense in making any other changes to rules or score reporting for the
contest.
The only solution, if you want to compete, is to go to where the
geographic advantage exists. Atlantic Canada is as good a spot as any.
