I've heard contesters referred to as cliquish on several occasions. I have to
say, I haven't found this to be the case at all.

For instance: When I first started playing this game in the mid 80's, the local
(MI) contesters welcomed me aboard and were more than
willing to offer advise, assistance, and opportunities to operate in multi-op
efforts. Again, this past year I began setting up a second station in
another state (TN), and again found that the local group was friendly, helpful,
and welcomed me to the area.

I can't say the same for the "general purpose" radio clubs that I've been
acquainted with.

It seems like many must expect to have the red carpet rolled out for them just
because they're the new guy. This isn't a realistic
expectation in any facet of community life.
