Mike,

eQSL has the same issues with the backslash. It's easier to fix that on the fly 
there and/or contact the station in question to resolve an easy to fix issue.

I'm now wondering if I should even bother uploading by county, as LoTW nor the 
ARRL support or sponsor any county related awards.

That's probably a good question to put forth here, does have the county listed 
with a LoTW help anyone?
