I'm curious.
Why is there such a strong push for this "Extreme" category, on the [as yet
unproven] grounds that it will improve the radio art and increase
participation by others. but appears to only benefit a very small handful of
contesters. and may have unintended & unforeseen consequences for other
amateur radio related programs that may come back to haunt us?
Yet -- there is a very strong contingent against the notion of a
limited-time category or categories within the Major DX contests, which
would clearly benefit a large portion of contesters who simply do not (due
to family, work, and other commitments, or other legitimate reasons) have a
full 48 hours to devote to the contests?
While it is also as yet unproven, it seems logical and reasonable that
someone who has limited time may be more motivated to operate, if that
contester actually has a chance to compete against their peers and "win" a
category. Yet this is being dismissed out of hand by many of the same
people who post that the Extreme category is the niftiest thing since sliced
bread, and that all of us Luddites should just shut up and let the
steamroller move onwards.
Hmmm. Something that might benefits the elite is "good." Something that
might benefit the majority is "not so good."
I can't quite put my finger on it, but somehow, this just doesn't quite add
up.
