Interesting history in the second link showing it's DARC origins dating back to
1936.

Subject: AW: [CQ-Contest] 55th Worked All Europe DX Contest (WAEDC) CW
Hello Al,
Thanks for the good wishes.
I just have checked the rules of the first WAEDC 1955 again, you can find them
here (but German language only, sri – it’s an extract of the original DL-QTC):
http://www.darc.de/referate/dx/archives/waedc1955.pdf .
Some important rules were already part of the 1st WAEDC:
- Separate 48 hour parts for CW and Phone (no RTTY at that time yet)
at that time both on two weekends in September,
- Traffic only between Europeans and Non-Europeans,
- The famous and unique QTC traffic.
If you want to know more about the WAEDC history, one of my predecessors Ben,
DL6RAI has prepared a nice write-up in English, included here starting from
page 3:
http://www.darc.de/referate/dx/archives/waedc2004.pdf
I hope we can keep up this tradition despite all modern changes…
Best 73 de Joerg, DL8WPX
