I simply typed in JESUISCHARLIE as the name on the two Cabrillo records

In the recent NAQP contest, there was a station who used 'JESUISCHARLIE'
for his name. This name is too long to fit in the standard Cabrillo field
for operator name. I submitted my log with what I copied for a name, even
though it makes the QSO line longer than permitted by Cabrillo format. Any
idea how the contest organizers will score this? KL9A - Are you on the

N1MM's created Cabrillo File has the first ten characters of the longer
name,
so I assume that is the defined length of the NAME FIELD for the NAQP
Cabrillo
file, and there hopefully is no problem.

There is no statement in the NAQP rules for the length of the NAME field.

Individual Cabrillo QSO fields are separated by one or more spaces.
If a field has more characters than expected, the checking software
generally ignores the "extra" characters, whether they were Sent or
Received.

If someone had sent in a NAQP exchange, "NAME IS TIM QTH IS MD" I would put
TIM and MD in my logger and they would show up in the Cabrillo. I would not
put NAMEISTIM in the Cabrillo.

If someone sends me "JE SUIS CHARLIE LA " I'm assuming he's speaking French
(a perfectly cromulent language in several important parts of North
America) and put CHARLIE LA in the logger.

Let's hope Rumplestiltskin doesn't come back!

I am just trying to understand your logic (as well as the whole point of
sending "JESUISCHARLIE" instead of the _NAME_ as required by rules).
Let say I speak Ukrainian or Russian and I would send my name as "??? ???
???? ON" - would you assume and what would you LOG?
Can't even imagine what would have happened if we would have a Chinese
speaking operator in the above example.

Thanks.

P.S. I believe there are plenty of places where you may express your
political and civil position besides HAM Radio.

The man chose the contest to express his solidarity with the people of
France after the terrible loss of life last month. ?It isn't about politics or
"civil", it's about our common humanity and abhorrence of senseless
violence and sacrifice of human life.

Your snarly remarks are loutish and ill mannered.

Almost 5 000 people were killled in Ukraine since the start of the
"conflict" in April.
Over a 1 000 000 lost their homes.
Would it be appropriate for HAM Radio operators to get on the air in the
next (Phone) NAQP and show solidarity by giving something as an exchange
instead of the names?

I thought I am playing radio here, not politics.

I did not take it as directed at me.

In fact, I probably share Charly's disdain of "automation" -- not having to
copy anything yourself, or find CQers or mults yourself.

As I've said, "My wife tells me to act young, but the best I can do is
immature." Nonetheless, on this topic I gladly play the curmudgeon.
