Has anyone ever done SO2R with no bandpass filters?

Sure, but the success rate will depend on the radios, the antennas, and their proximity. Those are very big variables, so the success rate varies a lot. :) If both radios are K3s (which have very low phase noise on TX and RX and very good strong signal RX performance), the success rate will be much higher.

For bandpass filters, look at the excellent kits designed and put together by 5B4AGN, a Brit living on Cyprus. Excellent performance, moderate cost.
