I was asked why I use sidetone/monitor at all.
First, when designing the system, I wanted to be able to listen to my own
transmitted signal for any keying issues. You know, dot/dash/silent ratios
may vary when using computer keying.
Also, I wanted to be able to monitor if I had pressed the correct F key.
Second, when doing the first experiments, I noticed I want to be able to
follow my transmission to know when the PTT is free for the other radio to
time better the enter or F key pressing.
Now, after some contests I have noticed I need to be able to tell which
radio the audio comes from to recognize the keyboard I should be typing.
There may be other reasons, too, but these are the biggest ones to me.
To go deeper into audio switching, the story gets increasingly complex.
There are many ways to handle the audio switching.
One way is to have no switching at all.
In case someone wants to think how to arrange the audio switching, the key
for the operator is he must be able to do any required task as easily and
simply as possible.
The operator gets into cognitively challenged state after some 30+ hours
into the contest.
The logging/controlling system must help the operator to cope with the
complexity when fatigue comes in between the headphones.
The fatigue reaches higher levels than ever experienced with SO1R or
Run+S&P concepts.
This year CQ WW CW, I was nearly knocked out already after the first 12
hours.
One of my fatigue contributors was my audio switching device I had with me
atop OH0V was too clumsy to use.
