The east coast USA has and advantage (usually), just like the far
eastern part of Canada has an advantage over the east coast USA
(usually), just like southern Italy has an advantage over Bolzano
(usually).
It simply cannot be equalized under current rules.
And, as Doug mentioned, depending on who comes out to play and what
level, you can definitely see winners other than what you would
expect...If winning is your only metric.
A small group of us did a M2 last week for ARRL DX. We hoped we would
win, but didn't think we were guaranteed a win. We opted for M2 so that
each person got maximum chair time - mainly to have fun and not watch
the other ops have fun. That was a victory for us!

Thanks for your further thoughts on the topic.
Beside the "very old" wins by W7RM and N5AU (M/M),
Please check out N2IC/5 for "current" data.
CQWW SSB USA win in 2013
SOABHP 7,529,827 points 4,338 Qs 160Z and 472 C.
The point is that the "impossible" is possible..even with no "huge JA runs" of
the past which you cited.
If you refer to my original post on the topic, I do say that "historically, on
average, that is true."
But if you don't try (think it is impossible), then you are sure to not
win/place/show.
And besides, is it really ONLY about winning? Having FUN is the key. Winning
is icing on cake.
There is great comradery in competition.
At least that is my approach (YMMV).
