I'm not sure why "classic" was started with an upper case C, but the very 
original M/S was
One rig, two or more ops, and typically lots of beer.

Guys would simply take turns operating, hence "multi-op, single transmitter."

If there was an actual CLUB station (as we still have at some universities), 
M/S was the way to
go if more than one student wanted to operate during the contest.
