As Carl and Dave said, you don't use a comport for your network card.  It
does use up an IRQ though, and that may be a problem.

Given what you have told us, I would suggest you put in a serial port switch
on com 2 and switch to an external modem when you want to do FAX.

Also, you may want to look into connecting your HotSync for your Palm etc.
via a USB port to free up Com 4.

USB is faster too.

If you can do the USB route for your PDA, you won't need a switch for Com 2.
Put the modem on Com 4 then.
