too many irons in the fire.  i should have explained that you hear
what k5tr is hearing - left channel is left headphone, right channel
is right headphone.  a room microphone is mixed in with each headphone
channel.  most of the time during this clip he has the left radio on
the left headphone and the right on the right.  about half-way through
the clip, george reaches over to a white box beside the right radio.
that is the headphone control.  while working k7ina, he briefly has
the left radio going to both headphones.  the static you hear is
real - storms were in the area.

you don't hear the digital voice keyer going to the left run radio,
but you can tell when he is calling cq by watching the red transmit
led on the al1500 go on.  at the same time, a greed led on the
beverage control box goes off (since he is transmitting).  whenever
you see this, the dvk is calling cq on the right radio.
