On the low-bands, ionospheric absorption is a limiting factor. The
application PropView uses the IONCAP engine to generate predictions,
plotting both the MUF-based limits on refraction as well as  absorption
effects to show you what bands are likely to be open between your QTH
and a specified location over a 24 hour period. PropView is free, and
available via www.qsl.net/propview .

PropView is a member of the DXLab Suite, a free set of applications that
can work independently, but sense each other's presence and interoperate
automatically. For example, running PropView and DXView simultaneously
means that clicking on a location on DXView's World Map will
automatically set the "destination" location in PropView, allowing you
to generate a forecast with a single mouse click. Similarly,
SpotCollector automatically forwards current solar flux readings to
PropView, eliminating the need for manual entry of that parameter.

While it won't help you on the low bands, PropView has the ability to
monitor the IARU/NCDXV HF beacon network, assembling schedules based on
band, location, or bearing. If Commander (the DXLab transceiver control
application) is running, PropView will QSY your transceiver as required
to monitor each beacon in the schedule; if DXView is running, the beacon
being currently monitored will be highlighted on the world map, and
(optionally) your beam will be rotated to the correct bearing.  All
DXLab applications are free, and available via www.qsl.net/dxlab .

Tomas:

How does the MUF map predict availablity of a DX path
for 80 Meter QSOs (which was the original question),
or for 160 Meters?

Are there better tools available for realtime display
of current conditions for 160/80 DX paths?
