Jon,
First try a battery-powered receiver, and pull your main breaker
to make sure it's not in your own house.
Then, get a battery-powered AM rx for the vhf aircraft band, and
build a dipole for that band. Make the dipole nice and straight,
not droopy like an inverted vee, and make it so you can hold it
over your head on a stick and rotate it. When the noise goes
through a null, the ends of the dipole are in line with the
noise. Good hunting!
