I use the "Big Cap" to keep the radio from shutting off when I start the
pickup. When I start the pickup the voltage drops enough to shut off the radio
without the Cap. My cables to the battery are oversized and I still got enough
of a voltage drop to shut off my 706 and now my ic-7000.
And yes, I have heard lots of times you shouldn't start your engine with the
radio on because of voltage spikes. I am a farmer and during irrigation season
I start my engine more times in a day than most people in a month. The radio
is on all day long.
With an old battery the radio will still shutoff, even with the Cap. I think
it is a one Farad cap.

Is there an advantage using those 'big caps' when mobile? Perhaps a positive
noise reduction from the car electrical/electronics?

On that one, no. I use a smaller Audio Cap than the one you linked to, with
my IC-7000. It has a meter display and I have not had a problem with any
noise.

Has anyone put an AM/SW portable near these things?

I am wondering if the meter display electronics generate any
RFI.
