I wonder if their may be a grounding problem. I run the legal limit out
of 1500 watts. The serial port of one computer connects to the CI-V
system and 756Pro as well as an Icom 7000. The two computers are side
by side (Quad core 3.2Gig Atholns in full size tower cases) There is a
tuner card that takes video from a satellite receiver as well as off the
air. Both computers have Gigabyte NICs that tie to a pair of CAT6
cables 113 feet long. These cables pretty much parallel the feed lines
to the tower from the shop and the house. The run under the 40 meter
antennas and within about 60' of 75 meter antennas (15 feet from the
feed lines) . The other end of the CAT6 cables hook to the gigabit
switch and router along with 3 more computers. Although the RF will
light up the LEDs on the control head for the SO2R 6-pack at just above
1 KW out, there is no apparent effect on any of the computers.
The station consists of the 756Pro driving an Emtron DX-2sp to the legal
limit out through a Palstar AT5K tuner, then to a patch panel and from
there the LMR-600 cables run to the 6-pack, and remote antenna switch
along with the control cables through 3" PVC conduit underground. The
Icom 7000 is fed from the same ps as the 756Pro and tied into the same
station grounding.
The system grounding consists of about 32 8' ground rods cad welded (TM)
to a network of over 600' of bare #2 copper. All towers and both
stations are tied to this network even though the house and shop have
separate electrical feeds. The grounds for the feeds are also tied into
that same grounding network.
So far I've not noticed any RF getting into the computers of feed back
into the stations from the house or shop.
I do not have chokes on any of the networks or control lines.
Considering all the ways I've set the system up that should allow RF to
"get into things" and it doesn't, it makes me wonder more about
grounding, ground loops, or lack of grounding in this case.
