The cable tv company came out early on, disconnected it from the street and
nothing changed. So I am assuming they are clear. They were the forst to
respond.

FYI, I found this link to the FCC web site regarding the protocol that they
have for resolving any RFI problems associated with your local cable
company;

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/cable-television-where-file-complaints-regarding-c
able-service

Of special significance to me was the following from their web page:

You should contact the FCC if you have complaints or questions about the
following issues:
    * Signal leakage from cable systems, which can result in
interference to other users of the spectrum, including aeronautical services.
Contact
1-888-225-5322 or send your inquiry to FCC, Consumer & Governmental
Affairs Bureau, 445 12th Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20554.
I hope you find this information to be useful.

I would assume that a cable modem or DSL router could cause noise. Are
you talking about noise on the actual cables? If so I don't think so.

Issues at their boxes where they boost signal levels etc could certainly
be worth investigating.

You need to get a directional noise finder and locate the noise yourself
instead of just calling a bunch of companies and hoping for them to find
something.

Dale,

I checked with Costco and they only carry LED back lit TV sets now. In
thinking about it further, I don't think making a measurement on the
power cord with an RF current probe would be too definitive anyway
because of the RFI coming from the other sets connected on the same
circuit. It would be instructive if you could conduct some tests on
your neighbor's set. Would it be possible to use a battery and quiet
inverter to power the set with all other wires disconnected? You might
have to connect the cable to get the screen to light. If you could do
that and it eliminated the RFI then the line filters Ed suggested might
work for you.

Just some thoughts.

Tom,

I'd love to do a lot of stuff with their tv, but it's not my house and I hate
to impose on them. I have to catch the neighbor outside on a weekend and chat
with him a little and maybe something might get going. As you can see I'm a
little squeamish about imposing on other people's home and property. I guess I
wouldn't like it much and therein lies my problem, hi. But I'll work on it.
Maybe by the time I finally can do some real investigation the TV will die.

how much time and effort have you already spent on this? how much more is it
going to cost to get your antique noise hunting stuff working? you can buy a
brand new 40" LED TV for under $400, why not just tell them you'll trade a
brand new one complete with internet access and all sorts of features for their
antique noisemaker and then run over it with your car!
