I'll repeat my recommendation of a VHF/UHF radio that has an AM
detector. I have two -- a Kenwood TH-F6A talkie, and a Kenwood TM-V71A
(I think that's the model number) mobile rig.
I drive around monitoring around 160 MHz, then when it gets really loud,
switch to a frequency in the 450-525 MHz to nail the source when I'm close.
This only works for arcing (mostly power lines), which is extremely
broad band. It does NOT work for electronically generated trash.
Also, remember that you can hold a talkie close against your chest to
form a half-space antenna that will help with DFing. I once won our
Chicago club's annual foxhunt using nothing more than a TH-F6A with a
duckie.
