I have a handy talkie and a mobile rig with AM. I have a directional
2/440 Arrow beam that I can use.
I am pretty sure what I have is power line noise. One of the major
source was fixed but might be acting up again and then I just noticed
some noise in another direction.
They don't seem to come and go on a regular basis so I doubt it is my
neighbors growing the wacky weed.
Thanks for all the replies.

I'll repeat my recommendation of a VHF/UHF radio that has an AM
detector. I have two -- a Kenwood TH-F6A talkie, and a Kenwood TM-V71A
(I think that's the model number) mobile rig.
I drive around monitoring around 160 MHz, then when it gets really
loud, switch to a frequency in the 450-525 MHz to nail the source when
I'm close.
This only works for arcing (mostly power lines), which is extremely
broad band. It does NOT work for electronically generated trash.
Also, remember that you can hold a talkie close against your chest to
form a half-space antenna that will help with DFing. I once won our
Chicago club's annual foxhunt using nothing more than a TH-F6A with a
duckie.
