I have not found CFL's to cause RFI. I have them all over the house including
two in the shack. All are quiet. I have yet to try LED lighting, maybe some
day.

When CFLs first appeared, ARRL bought a mess of them from the big box stores
and found that the ones being sold are pretty RF quiet. They were better than
the FCC Part 18 limits, often by quite a bit. We have a couple of reports of
RFI from CFLs, but they appeared to be an occasional import/eBay purchase, an
unknown model or what appears to be defective bulbs, which can happen.

Good info Chris. Thanks for sharing with the group.

It would also be interesting what level of RFI you get at other distances
greater than 1.5 ft. I might try this before I reinstall my antennas on my
roof this spring/summer.

I have two CFL bulbs (forgot which mfr) in an outdoor (garage) fixture
approximately 40-50 feet from my ground mounted HF vertical. Been almost a
year now with no RFI on 80 thru 10 meters.

I have noticed some items like Cisco's wireless TV boxes generate a lot of
broadband RFI in close proximity, but the RFI drops off quickly with distance
(like around 30-40 ft). I still had my cisco boxes removed due to RFI to the
garage door openers only 2 to 3 ft away.

Subject: [RFI] Low RFI 60w CFL bulb

Hello Group,

A quick post regarding my RFI experience with CFL bulbs.

I recently bought 3 brands of CFL bulbs at the local big-box DIY store for a
nightstand lamp.

I placed my SW portable on the nightstand (about 1.5 feet from bulb) and
listened on 454 KHz, 4, 7, 14, and 21 MHz for RFI.

I heard significant RFI from the Philips EnergySaver Silicone Coating 14w =60w
featuring TuffGuard protection, soft white, shatter resistant, 790 lumens, 2
pack.

I heard significant RFI from the Cree 4Flow, 60w, 2700K, soft white, dimmable,
815 lumens, single pack.

I heard nil RFI from the GE energy smart, Bright from the Start, 60w uses 15w,
800 lumens, soft white, 2 pack.

Thus, I recommend the GE energy smart, Bright from the Start CFL bulb for RFI
sensitive applications. As always, YMMV.

Hope this helps.

Chris
