Tnx Howard for the info. I had one CFL that consumed 42W. Don't remember it's
equivalent. It worked fine in the summer. But even before it got down to
freezing the light output was significantly reduced.
Oh, and I have had two CFL 3-ways that smoked up the family room. All my high
usage lights have been or are in the process of being replaced with LED's.
If the lights must also serve a decorative roll such as my pole lights along
the driveway then I use 2700-2800K bulbs. For other rolls I go higher on the K
range.

Tony,

For what it’s worth, I live in upstate NY and use three CFL’s in outdoor
fixtures that are on every night. I picked these because they specify they are
indoor/outdoor. They are dimmer when it’s maybe below +5 degrees F, but even at
-20 they’re effective at providing at least some light to the areas desired.
They are the EcoSmart brand from Home Depot and are 40 watts equivalent. (No,
nowhere as bright as the 400W ones you replaced.) No comment, however, on the
hideous light quality compared to incandescents. ;-)

RFI? The package specifies it may cause interference between 450 KHz and 30
MHz, but my antenna is maybe 75 feet from the nearest one. I’ve noticed no RFI.
