It's vitally important to make sure you are listening to the source of the real problem. Otherwise, you can waste a lot of time tracking down extraneous noise sources. I've found the best way to do this is to relay the noise from my home receiver so I can listen to it while I'm searching. I put the home receiver in AM mode, AGC off. There's always a pattern of fluctuations; when they match, you're listening to the right source. There is expensive equipment which records a noise "signature", but I think you can do just as well, or better, just by listening this way.

attenuated if the sound changes in the noise then it is not a sparking source.
