I think George may have the "best" answer of all.  I suspect he is right
that 250 Hz is a bit too narrow and I am sure 500 Hz is definitely too
wide. 

Until recently, 250 or 500 Hz was all the choice we had, and of the two,
my preference is 250, especially during contests.

As more DSP rigs come on the market with variable bandwidth and steep
skirts, something around 300 Hz may prove to be the "best".  It's going
to be interesting figuring it out.  :-)
