I have beenusing a FT-840 since I got my General ticket in June 2005 and I
had to do it all over again I would have saved up few more pennies and
bought the IC-718. The FT-840 has no options for SSB filters as well as no
DSP capabilities at all.

Also the 718 has a rear panel port for data/soundcard connection where as
the 840 does not have this type of port so its either (A) no microphone (B)
some type of switch between the two.

Also after just having competed in my first RTTY contest the front end of
the 840 does not seem to handle multiple strong signals that are close
together very well as the AGC will kill the one you don't want it to.

As for a field day radio which I have used the one I now own for the last 5
years while under its previous owner, on 15meters it worked great for field
day.

Just my opinion. . . .
