Peter,
You are right - I looked up the ARRL product review, the SSB is BW=2855 Hz measured at the 6 dB down points. To use 2800 Hz data effectively you would need to add about 100 Hz on each side to stay in the flat "linear phase" portion of the pass band, so well upwards of 2800 Hz is needed on the receiver and transmitter, perhaps 3 kHz+(?) to effectively use 2.8 kHz emissions. This starts to be "software defined radio territory". SDRs are becoming more prevalent, so we definitely can not live without a specified BW limit.

Kai,

FYI---- FWIW, a Ten-Tec Orion (original or Mdl-II, 565/566) has an
adjustable SSB TX bandwidth of up to 3KHz wide. These were available for
over 10 years. They are 'out-of-production' now, but easily found for
reasonable prices (depends on your budget).

The original post made me look up the bandwidth, too, on my now out of
production IC746Pro and it's 2.8 kHz on SSB Phone. "2.2 kHz is too
narrow!"

Kidding. Carry on.
