One big reason for contests to be consistent across modes is to keep the guys
who program the contest loggers (N1MM, etc.) sane. They have a tough enough
time now keeping up with contest changes.
Another would be for contests that are multi-mode and allow mixed mode
operation.
The initial post may have been tongue-in-cheek, but I have seen it raised
seriously before, so it was hard to tell.
To be realistic, the 599 battle is a loosing battle. The are just too many
contests that call for it. Just consider it a strange way of saying Hello.
Without it, there would be more requests for repeats of the actual exchange,
especially on voice where it is a way to activate VOX, like clearing your
throat, before saying the important stuff.
