I am concerned that the capacitor is one in a bank of 4 that are used in
the AL-811 HV power supply. It is obvious the one in the picture
"erupted" but I question whether replacing only one capacitor in the HV
circuit would only temporarily solve the problem. Another cap in that
bank could let loose soon thereafter and create another repair cycle.
Is there a non-destructive method to verify the remaining capacitors are
still up to the job? With easy access to parts and relatively low cost
shipping within the USA, this is probably of less concern to us "over
here."
What do others think?

There may be much cheaper alternatives for shipping. I've sent packages
to Costa Rica thru a shipping service based in Florida - it was MUCH
cheaper than using FedEx or UPS.

Hi Barry - In my limited experience, DHL is horrifically expensive to
your part of the world - I once tried to arrange return of a 2-pound
QS1R from Namiibia for repairs, and was told DHL would be several
hundred US$ each way. For packages under 4 pounds in weight, First
Class postage isn't too bad, and my package made it to Windhoek OK
that way, but I was told it was iffy. Frankly, I figured that in that
case I could re-send the pacjkage several times before it added up
even to Priority Mail International, never mind DHL
If you'd like to give this a try, I can order the parts and transship
to you, then get reimbursed via PayPal. If you want to do this, let's
take this off the reflector.

WOW!! What an amazing response!!!
I had NO idea that anyone could get parts directly from Ameritron
(MFJ)....
would be awesome if I could source those components at those prices!!
Even
my limited budget can stretch to that!!
Pete N4ZR brings up a couple of interesting points : Import duty is
not a
problem if sent by a private individual as a "gift" under a nominal
amount
(I think it is about $100)... bust reliability of mail is a HUGE problem
here - our National Post Office is effectively bankrupt, and often
cannot
afford to pay airfreight for parcels to outlying cities! I am 1000km
away
from the main "hub" in Johannesburg, and often airfreight items can lie
there for several weeks before being forwarded (if they make it to their
destinations at all). For example, my mother received a Christmas
card from
a relative in the UK (posted 2 weeks before Christmas) on this past
Monday!!
I unfortunately do not have any contacts travelling anywhere abroad for
several months (my friends John ZS6JON and Paul ZS6NK are going to
Friedrichshafen this year, but that is now only in July). As this
would be a
small and light parcel, it would probably be practical and affordable to
have it sent via DHL or similar - at least then I would be assured of
getting it!!
Would be really great if someone that can accept Paypal could manage
to get
these items from Ameritron (to be sure of no further issues I would
ideally
like to get 2 of each!) and forward them to me via DHL/Aramex or similar
labelled as a "gift", and I could then reimburse via Paypal!!!
Thanks SO much for all the responses - really appreciated!!

The resistor is Ameritron part 107-4500 $2.40
The Cap is Ameritron part 270-6210-7 $13.53
From MFJ. I assume they can be found cheaper elsewhere.
