Sounds like you have the Auto Arrange function selected.

Right-click on anywhere on your desktop,  In the window that opens, 
highlight "Arrange Icons By".  In the sub-menu see if Auto Arrange is 
has a check mark beside it.  If it does, click on it to take the check 
mark away.

Re-arrange your icons the way you like them and you should be home free.
