Alinco DX70 or DX77, 100 watts output, Outbacker mobile antenna. Thanks to
KO4RR for the use of his diesel VW Jetta with mobile rig and antenna installed.
Thanks also to KU8E for his hard work in developing a route that would cover as
many counties not already projected to be covered by other Rovers. I have a MFJ
mobile antenna tuner and it was invaluable to get the antenna properly tuned on
the CW bands. I didn't have it properly tuned in the early part of the contest
and found it almost impossible to make contacts on 40M. After a QSY to work
N6MU on 15M, I retuned it and it worked much better on 40M afterward. Before
starting out for the second day on Sunday, I also tuned the antenna tuner for
20M and think it helped. However, conditions, especially for Europe, seemed
much better Saturday than Sunday. 40M was good to Europe both days. We had a
lot of QRN on Saturday from a line of storms that moved through Saturday. It
was pouring rain when I borrowed the car from KO4RR about two hours before the
QSO Party started. Sunday, it was quieter. Skip was relatively long on 20M,
with only a few QSOs as near as Ohio and Illinois (and one with K4TD in AL), but
generally the closer in stations weren't coming through. To a great extent,
this was true on 40M also. Very few QSOs were possible with other GA stations
and AL too even during the middle of the day. It seemed we were always just
skipping over each other. The skip zone lengthened out at night, but didn't
seem to get much beyond the fourth call area. 20M seemed to close about 02Z
Saturday night, but I did make a successful QSO to 20 with N6MU at 0458Z. I
guess activity just dropped off. 20M seemed to drop out much earlier Sunday
night.
This was my first Rover operation in several years without a driver (and
sometimes another operator). I disciplined myself to put safety first by
turning the radio off while driving between counties. In the past, I have
operated while in motion, but that is very difficult. I logged on paper and
will have to type all the QSOs into a Cabrillo file for logchecking. I made no
attempt to hook up the computer in the car this year as I doubted my ability to
handle all that alone in the car. I spent about 15 minutes less than half of
the contest period driving and the rest was in opeation while stopped. I tried
to find a vacant parking lot or other area well off the road for a safe place to
operate. A lot of church parking lots, public buildings, and some usused
driveways were found. In two counties, the first places found had high power
line noise and I moved to a second, near-by, location.
