Thanks, Peter.  That was a real good synopsis.

There was a sync detector article in QST by a Finnish ham using
NE602 and NE604 chips.  Comm Qtrly had an article using a Motorola
MC13022 that was intended as a retrofit into older radios.  The 
author had used it in a Hallicrafters with a 455 kc IF.

There is also a "quasi-sync" detector, where the signal you are 
listening to is amplified and used as the BFO signal as well as 
the IF signal in a product detector.  This works best with stronger 
signals.

I've listened to W1ZN's T-T 1254 and it sounds great just the way 
it is, but it sure is hard not to think about making "improvements".
