Putting a resistor in series with the RS lamp will extend the life and 
bring the brightness down to the level of the 1892. Something like 22 
ohms @ 1/2W should be a fair starting place.

Another possible source for 1892 lamps is  a 2-way radio shop, if there's 
one in your area.
