[TenTec] CW tuning

Hi,
I've decided to focus some time oncw and have a tuning question.
The Omni VI+ manual suggests holding in the cw button and using the 
resultant tone as a reference for tuning in the signal. I've tried this and 
I'm not sure what I'm listenig for, can someone help with a description?
