Just picked up a real basket case Century 21.
It's all there, now seems to work and it's in great cosmetic condition
but it came to me in a hundred pieces boxed in a Rubbermaid storage bin.
I've gotten 90% of it together but am having trouble with the PTO.
Unlike the other Ten-Tec rigs, where I've had no trouble rebuilding the
PTO, this Century 21 has a small lever under the main tuning knob with
a planetary gear scheme giving increased drive reduction.
The original spring was missing on this lever (an assortment of generic
springs was packed in the parts). I've tried various tensions but
can't get a balance between PTO internal friction and planetary gear
slippage. I'm going to rebuild the PTO to attempt to reduce friction
even more even though the original owner claims he just did it.
I've found scratch marks on the end of the main shaft worm gear
threading that fits into the saddle. Apparently he scored it badly while
pulling or reinserting the retaining pin. Hopefully Ten-Tec still has
this part since it's not part of the rebuild kit.
In any event, as things stand, the planetary gears pop out of mesh.
Does anyone else have experience with the Century 21 PTO drive scheme?
tnx es 73,
Doug/WA1TUT
