To those that have asked, I'll let the cat out of the bag and hope that
Paul at Tentec won't wring my neck the next time I see him. Sorry to
brag Paul, but you guys do great work and go to great lenghts to make
for happy customers. THANKS!
Now to business at hand. I raised concern regarding zipper noise and
birdies, especially on 15M, 12M and 10M. Detailing such in writing, as
to frequency mode and etc., I sent the radio back to Tentec. They were
very gratious in addressing my concerns.
Here's the repair report:
Quote:
The following work was done in an effort to reduce birdies. Added 6
snap on EIM Ferrite chokes to control lines on logic board. Added
bypassing and grounds to 9 MHz xtal filter board. Replaced U-1 on 9 MHz
xtal filter board. Replaced diode mixer D-31 on bandpass filter board
and added top side grounds. Relocated cables and added grounds to xtal
osc L.O. board.
End Quote:
They also did some other work to correct faults after a near by
lightening strike caused some other problems.
Overall, I find that the work done did improve, to my satisfaction, the
zipper noise and birdies. Now I didn't say that they were all
eliminated, but these changes made a big difference. BTW, the radio is
used largely as the 10 meter IF for the 144 MHz and 432 MHz transverters
which are part of my EME system. I make it my business to listen for
weak signals. Birdies or otherwise. As the IF in my application, the
Omni VI+ hears signals that other radios won't hear under the same
conditions. I've tried them.....I know.
