I'd rather there was a lamp, say 200 or 250 watts in series with the
input to the amplifier. Then feed that with the variac and plan on
several days. Raise the voltage a little and wait until the current
falls, then raise it some more. If the light goes bright, and doesn't
dim, the capacitors have shorted instead of reformed. If that happens
the lamp should keep them from exploding but new capacitors will be
required. If the capacitors were of high quality 4 years ago, they may
be easily resurrected. But sometimes they short instead of reform.
