Craig,
I do not think you could go wrong with an Orion.
I have had mine since August and love it. I also own an Icom 766 PRO II and an
Icom 775DSP. The Orion is my first choice for working DX on 160 and 80 where
weak signal handling capability in presence of strong USA signals is really
important. Since I have hasd such success on these bands, I stay with the
Orion on other bands too...it is such a pleasure to operate. W4ZV and others
have been most kind in posting their settings on these reflrectors as
information...to give us a leg up.
TenTec is very customer focused...easy to reach by telephone and always
helpful. Their 30 day no questions asked return policy is the best in the
business...so there is no reason to not try an Orion. If one reads the
manual...and contacts TenTec on any questions...I am sure they will love the
radio.
I can see the day when I have 3 of these radios...one for daily operation and
two for the contest station at the ranch...not because the Icom radios are so
deficient...but because the Orion is such a pleasure to operate, audio quality
is so easy on the ears and the upgrades come over the internet...so the radio
will remain state of the art for many years.
Go for it!

I appreciate the testimonials I have stirred up with my original question and
this is certainly a worthwhile one. I run a Field now and am very unhappy
with the way it overloads in the presence of strong signals. That is the main
reason I am considering the Orion. Other than that one issue (admittedly a big
one), I like the Field.
I am gun shy about IF DSP after my experience with a 756Pro -- the buzzy
raspy CW receive was hard on my ears. I don't want to buy into glitchy software

I got enough of that with Windoze. And, I don't want to be knee deep in
menus to control the thing.
So far, I like what I am hearing about the Orion and thank all of you who
have responded.
