This is one simple case.

I use a QSK amplifier with a key line and a handshake line
connected to the Orion's QSK loop -- TX EN OUT to key the amp,
and TX EN IN to handshake with the Orion to prevent hotswitching.

In this case at least, it isn't rocket science and requires essentially
no $$.

1. Connect a "Y" connector to the Orion's TX EN OUT line (the only
expnse, if you don't have one in your junk box).
2. Connect one side of the "Y" to the amp's key in line
3. Connect the other side of the "Y" to a footswitch or an open
collector switch run by your favorite contest software's PTT output
line, or both, whatever.
4. Leave the handshake line from the amp connected to TX EN IN.
5. Increase QSK delay if you want to be deaf while sending.

That's it. Leaving the Orion TX EN OUT line connected to the amp
in a wired-or configuration makes sure that you won't hot switch
things if your foot slips while the Orion is still keyed up. The TX EN
IN line makes sure the Orion doesn't key up before the relays have
switched.

There are probably equally simple approaches for other amp
configurations.

YMMV
