Must be that you need either NO digital readout, or a two color readout.  I 
recall working a good bit of DX with no digital readouts at all -- Globe 
Scout 680 and SX-99, etc.  I do recall that after I put the SB-650 digital 
readout (all one color) on my SB-102, that I could work absolutely nothing 
but stations in New Jersey. 

The spectrum scope would actually be a lot more useful if each signal 
were color coded -- black: the old ragchew geezer cross town; yellow: 
North America;  red:  DX; flashing red: RARE! DX. That way you'd know 
exactly where to tune and could pounce immediately on stations of 
interest without all that tuning malarkey.
