[TenTec] Testing an Encoder?

I have an Bourns optical encoder from a TT 301 knob and need to test it to see 
if it's good. If I apply 5vdc to the power leads, would I see pulses on a scope 
connected to one of the outputs while turning the knob? Is that a good way to 
test it?
