Age vs. Ears:
I noticed recently that I now prefer the 600 Hz to 500 Hz range for
listening. Formerly I was more than happy with 700 to 800 Hz. Age here is
57.
With the Orion I was able to (mis)adjust the rig for my pleasures, only to
find out in a recent contest where nobody seemed to be answering my CQs,
that they were all off frequency! I opened the bandwidth up to about 400 Hz
and began hearing people answering me. So I began listening at 700 Hz
again.
I guess I need to sit down and exactly analyze my own preference then
determine how I have to set up the rig to allow me to hear others at my
preferred pitch even though they are calling on my frequency.

As I grow older my ability to differentiate signal from noise is
changing in different frequency bands. Though it takes more
concentration, I find now (I turned 50 last year) that I often listen
below 500 Hz whenever I can. I can use the 600 Hz offset OK, but it
doesn't work well for me if the signal is weak and next to the noise.
In fact, I find that during long CW QSO's, I like to have the RIT
engaged so that I can vary the tone I listen to, it seems to keep my
concentration up. I don't go above 600 Hz very much, just occasionally
for a change. It is just plain hard on my ears :-)
