Greetings George,

It is entirely normal!! When you connect 2 receivers to one antenna, the signal is divided equally with a splitter, which sends half of the signal to each receiver(load). If it important to hear the full signal level on one receiver, use only one receiver(assuming that you don't get a better listening result by using the stereo effect of 2 receivers on the same frequency feeding seperate ears which in turn feed your brain, allowing your brain to pull really weak signals out of the noise)! The Orion has a main receiver which is exceedingly quiet at low signal level due to the use of the patented Jones oscillator circuits. Given the Japanese distain for paying royalties, I would suspect that the Jones low noise oscillator circuits will not be available in the Japanese radios until the patent runs out(just like Icom did with the Digi-Sel feature on the 7800--my JRC radios have had this feature for many years...JRC held the patent, and when it expired, Icom used it as a big improvement in their technology on the 7800).

Hi George,

I don't know what to say about the volume control situation, but I have
observed the same behavior as you regarding the
receiver antenna selection situation. As always, an antenna driving 2
separate loads simultaneously will deliver less voltage into each one of
them than when driving either one alone.

However, I've yet to find a situation where this compromised the ability of
the Orion to hear a signal.

I've observed this behavior in all versions of the software that I have
gone through, going all the way back to 1.340.

Orion owners.
I have noticed a problem with my Orion running on the latest firmware,
1.372. I never had the previous version as it was loaded at the factory.
When I switch the sub receiver to ant 2, that's where my beam is connected,
I notice a slight decrease of signal on the main receiver??? Is it the
loading of the sub receiver on the main receiver doing this. Is this normal?
I also get blasted out of my shack with the audio volume reverting to full
volume. I madly reach for the off button as my ears are near bleeding from
the blast! This happens, as I can remember, when I turn up the volume.
Turning it back on relieves this annoyance. This is a very infrequent affair.
The other small annoyances I can live with, so far.
